Essays

In my time as a writer I’ve published essays in the New Zealand news media, some of which became truly notorious! In 2016, national online newspaper stuff.co.nz published my now-infamous three-part opinion piece on some problematic aspects of life in New Zealand. The series made such a splash that Stuff published an additional article discussing reader responses and another in which readers responded to my assertions of sexism in rural New Zealand.

Part 1: New Zealand is no paradise, it is brutal

In all of the places I’ve stumbled through in a peripatetic decade, people of all nationalities, colours and creeds have been eager to tell me that New Zealand is paradise. I'm not so sure.

Part 2: New Zealand is no paradise, is it the most sexist place on earth?

Small-town New Zealand is one of the most misogynistic cultures I’ve ever seen – and I’ve lived in Saudi Arabia.

Part 3: New Zealand is no paradise: Rugby, racism and homophobia

Racism and homophobia have long been part of New Zealand’s rugby culture.
